The Ellen Browning Scripps American Women鈥檚 History Forum and Retrospective: 1926 to 2026
Westenley Alcenat,听Assistant Professor of History and Africana Studies
A centennial initiative of the Scripps College Department听of History,听the Ellen Browning Scripps American听Women’s听History Forum听and听Retrospective honors the College’s storied Black alumnae, advancing听women’s听empowerment and leadership in听the liberal arts through public听humanities, archival storytelling,听and intergenerational dialogue inspired by Ellen Browning听Scripps’ values.
Symposium for听Women听and Gender听Minorities in Mathematics in Southern California听听

WiMSoCal’s听aim is to create a network of mathematicians in Southern California to nurture collaborations and provide a framework for mentoring. These relationships can听help听mathematicians branch into new听disciplines and听areas of mathematics, explore听varied听ways to contribute to society and the profession, and听maintain听a healthy, balanced life.听
The symposium will feature support from current听Scripps听students, including听Ava Tse听鈥�28, Maya McClain听鈥�27, May Edmonds听鈥�28, Sitara听Putrevu听鈥�28, Kate Larson 鈥�27, Sammy Bio 鈥�28,听and听Jimena Sanchez 鈥�27.
Centennial Concert

Advanced vocalists from the last 15 years of Scripps College return to join Professor听Anne Harley for a听National Endowment of the Arts (NEA)-commissioned song cycle.听Performing works听inspired听by the听poems听of听former Los听Angeles听Poet Laureate Lynne Thompson ’72 and leading artists of the last听100 years, the concert听will听also听reprise the NEA-commissioned听Miracles of Thekla听by Scripps’ first听composition听music major,听Marjorie Merryman听鈥�72. Merryman will also听contribute听to classes and public lectures听during her听five-day residency.听
Scripps鈥櫶鼵entennial Dance History听

Celebrate Scripps’ centennial听through听living, breathing dance history. This four-part community series brings Southern California Latin Hustle elders, artists, and students together through storytelling, archival research, and dance, including intimate community convenings and a joyful public celebration. Born in 1970s New York disco clubs, Latin Hustle is a social partner听dance shaped by Afro-Latinx, Black, and queer communities. Come listen, learn, and move alongside the people who shaped this vibrant culture鈥�a party where everyone belongs! Program will run from fall 2026 through summer 2027.
Team Bronze: 100 Years of Care听

Be part of the story鈥�help preserve the art on campus! This听yearlong听conservation project will professionally clean, stabilize, and protect Scripps College’s outdoor bronze sculptures while giving students and the community hands-on learning and behind-the-scenes access. The work strengthens stewardship of our art collection through improved signage, documentation, and public engagement, leaving a lasting听centennial legacy of collaboration, education, and care for generations to come.
The Evolution of Fiber Arts at Scripps College听

The Evolution of Fiber Arts听exhibition plumbs the Denison Library archives to trace the history of weaving since the founding of听Scripps鈥� Department of Art.听Through its mid-century heyday to its resurgence today, contemporary听fiber arts听practices increasingly combine ancient techniques with digital processes. The show听will听feature five artists听working听at the conjunction of textiles and technology听to听reflect the current fiber arts curriculum at Scripps College.

The Spanish, Latin American, and Caribbean听Literatures and Cultures听department invites听all members of the community听to听celebrate Scripps鈥� centennial at听the听Mujeres Crean (Women听Create)听workshop and film听series!听The events will be bilingual, with interpretation available in English and Spanish.
