KeyÌýTakeawaysÌýfrom the 2025 Sustainability ReportÌý
AmongÌýScripps’Ìýmost significant accomplishments is a series of landscape improvements designed to conserve water—aÌýcrucial priority amid California’s ongoingÌýdrought conditions.ÌýÌý
AtÌýHibiscus Court andÌýClark Hall, facilities crews converted plantersÌýto drip irrigation, replacing less efficient watering methods with a system that delivers water directly to plant roots.ÌýTheÌýCollege also removedÌýwater-intensive hibiscus hedgesÌýtoÌýreduceÌýoverall irrigation demand.ÌýNew upgradesÌýtoÌýirrigation infrastructureÌýnowÌýmeet California’s Model Water Efficient Landscape Ordinance (MWELO) standards.Ìý
This year’s report alsoÌýshowcasesÌýannual waste diversion data, which details the amount ofÌýwasteÌýScrippsÌýsuccessfullyÌýdiverted from landfills. TheÌýinformationÌýprovides a moreÌýcomplete picture of campus operations while strengthening the accuracy of the College’s environmental reporting.Ìý
The Future of Sustainability at ScrippsÌý
ProgressÌýisn’tÌýstoppingÌýhere. With the announcement ofÌýScripps Forward,ÌýtheÌýCollege’s ambitiousÌýcampaign to raiseÌý$100 million,Ìýthe CollegeÌýwill introduce moreÌýinnovative solutions to reduce carbon emissions and create shared ownership over the campus’sÌýfootprint.ÌýÌý
Educating students on the importance of sustainability inside and outside the classroom is integral to creating a sustainability-conscious campus culture
For Balais, that involves integrating environmental action into daily life at Scripps, with students free to lead green efforts across campus. Last year, students helped orchestrateÌýScripps’ 14th Sustainability Fair, a consortium-wide event advancing sustainable projects on and off campus.ÌýÌý
“IÌýaimÌýto expand the Office of Sustainability’sÌýcampus presence throughÌýstudent-ledÌýworkshops and collaborations with faculty to integrate sustainability into coursework,â€ Balais says. “Educating students on the importance of sustainability inside and outside the classroom is integral to creating a sustainability-conscious campus culture.Ìý
